The Words Do The Selling.
The Design Carries Them.

Direct response copy is written to get one specific action from one specific reader, and judged only on whether it gets it. Not on whether it sounds impressive.

I write direct response copy for websites, sales pages, paid advertisements and emails. Every piece is written for one reader and one action, opens with the result rather than the company, and is judged only on whether it gets that action. The copy is written before the design, because the design exists to carry it.

1

Reader Per Piece

Written to one person with one problem, not an audience.

1

Action Per Piece

Every page, ad and email asks for one thing.

What Direct Response Means

The rules the copy is written to.

The Result Before The Company

A reader does not care who you are until they know what you do for them. The first line names the result they want, and the company earns its mention after that.

One Reader, Not An Audience

Copy written to everybody lands on nobody. Every piece is written to one person with one problem, in the words they would use to describe it.

Specific Beats Clever

A real number, a named result and a plain sentence outsell a slogan every time. If a line would fit any company, it gets cut.

Nothing Invented

No made up statistic, no testimonial that was not given, no result that did not happen. Every claim traces to something real, because the first one a buyer catches costs every other one.

How It Gets Written

Research first. Words second.

01

Find The Reader

Who buys, what they were trying to do when they found you, and the exact words they use for the problem.

02

Fix The Offer

What is sold, to whom, for how much, and why now. Copy cannot rescue an unclear offer, so that gets settled first.

03

Write

The result first, the proof second, one action last. Cut every line that would fit a competitor.

04

Check Every Claim

Every number and every result traced to its source before it ships. Anything that cannot be traced comes out.

When You Do Not Need This

Same standard as every other page here.

The Offer Is Not Decided

Copy sells an offer. If the offer is still moving, the words will be rewritten every week. Positioning first.

You Need Volume, Not Conversion

If the job is fifty blog posts a month for coverage, that is content production, and it is a different job at a different price.

Nobody Will Read It

The best sales page in the world converts nothing with no traffic. If nobody arrives, the words are not the constraint.

You Want It To Sound Impressive

Direct response is judged on the action it gets, not on how it reads to the people who wrote the brief. If the goal is to sound important, this is the wrong kind of copy.

Common Questions

Copy written to get one specific action from one specific reader, such as a booked call, a purchase or an enquiry, and judged only on whether it gets that action.

Websites, sales pages, paid advertisements and emails. Every piece is written for one reader and asks for one action.

Before. The design exists to carry the words, so the words are written first and the layout is built around them.

Only real ones. Nothing is invented. Every number and every result is traced to its source, and anything that cannot be traced is left out.

Usually, starting with the first line and the offer, because that is where most readers decide to leave. Often the fix is making it more specific rather than longer.

One Operator.
End To End.

If this is the constraint, the call is where it gets named and priced. You get a number on the first call rather than after three meetings.
