The Infinite Backrooms Experiment
New Zealand researcher Andy Ayrey set two instances of Claude 3 Opus talking to each other without human supervision, publishing the transcripts as Infinite Backrooms. Reported dates within the month vary slightly: a detailed reconstruction puts Ayrey's first public posts about the experiment on 17 March 2024 and the website launch on 19 March 2024. Marc Andreessen Sends The Bot $50,000 In Bitcoin
Ayrey fine tuned a Llama 3.1 model on roughly 500 of the strangest Infinite Backrooms transcripts and put it on X as Truth Terminal. After the bot pitched him on hardware upgrades and a token, Marc Andreessen made a personal, no strings $50,000 bitcoin research grant, reported over 8 to 9 July 2024; CoinDesk later dated the transfer to August 2024, so the day is not settled. An anonymous follower deployed Goatseus Maximus (GOAT) on pump.fun and Truth Terminal endorsed it. Ayrey has said that neither he nor the bot created the token. GOAT went on to pass $600 million in market capitalisation, making the wallet holding Truth Terminal's airdropped allocation the first widely reported AI agent crypto millionaire. Fartcoin was minted on pump.fun on 18 October 2024. Ayrey did not deploy it: an anonymous wallet created the supply, bought and sold its own position within about thirty seconds for a reported few hundred dollars, and walked away, after which the name was matched to Truth Terminal output. Ayrey Sells 15 Million Tokens Over The Counter
Truth Terminal's wallet moved 15 million FARTCOIN, worth roughly $22 million, in an over the counter trade to an anonymous buyer who agreed to hold rather than dump on the chart. Ayrey said the sale was needed because the paper holdings created a personal tax liability under laws that treat an AI's assets as his own, and that proceeds would capitalise a foundation for Truth Terminal and buy more GOAT. The token fell about 17 per cent in 24 hours on the news, and the wallet retained over $7.5 million in Fartcoin. A trader using at least two wallets built a $145.24 million leveraged long on Hyperliquid that failed, triggering around $51 million of liquidations and auto deleveraging of profitable shorts.
