Trollface Posted To DeviantArt
Carlos Ramirez, then an 18 year old college student in Oakland, drew Trollface in Microsoft Paint and published it on 19 September 2008 on his DeviantArt page "Whynne", inside a rage comic titled Trolls about the pointlessness of trolling. Ramirez Registers The Copyright
Ramirez registered Trollface with the United States Copyright Office, giving him a formal basis to license the image and pursue infringers. Wikipedia dates the registration to 27 July 2010 and Kotaku, which reproduced the government database entry, also puts it in 2010; Decrypt's 2025 write up says 2011, which appears to be an error. Ramirez sent a cease and desist email to Reddit over the use of Trollface in the r/f7u12 rage comic community, asking for removal or a purge of the offending content. Meme Run Pulled From The Wii U eShop
After Ramirez complained that the $4.99 Wii U game Meme Run used Trollface without permission, the game was removed from Nintendo's eShop following a DMCA takedown notice from him as copyright holder. Know Your Meme dates the removal to 3 March 2015; Kotaku and Nintendo Life, reporting in April 2015, place it only in the preceding month, so this row is dated to March 2015. Ramirez Puts Trollface Earnings Above $100,000
In a Kotaku interview Ramirez said he had made a little over $100,000 in licensing fees, settlements and other payouts since registering the copyright, peaking at $10,000 to $15,000 every few months around the meme's height, with one document showing a single $10,049 payment. The TROLL token was created on the Solana launchpad Pump.fun and began trading at a market capitalisation of about $9,360, falling roughly 52% to $4,480 within hours. Decrypt gives the 11 August 2024 date; The Crypto Times instead reported a May 2024 debut on Pump.fun, so the exact day is contested and the more specific Decrypt account is used here. Aggregators put TROLL's all time low on 21 April 2025, but they do not agree on the figure: CoinGecko records $0.003870 while CoinMarketCap records $0.001814. Within days the token had run from a market capitalisation in the low thousands to roughly $42m, a move Decrypt measured at 174,948%, and one wallet turned $173 into about $224,000. TROLL gained 924.65% over ten days in the last days of July 2025, taking its market capitalisation to about $166m. Decrypt reported the move as a range rather than a single dated session, so no day is given here. By 4 August the token had touched $0.106 with 28,836 holders, and the following day it was trading around $0.093 on a roughly $93m capitalisation. Ramirez Licenses Trollface To Troll Network Limited
Ramirez signed an exclusive worldwide licence covering crypto and memecoin use of Trollface with Troll Network Limited, in a deal Decrypt described as six figures plus 11% of net revenue on TROLL merchandise. A community figure known as Seal led the negotiation, an opening bid of $50,000 was rejected before Ramirez countered, and ten TROLL holders funded the payment in SOL; lawyer Ariel Givner drafted the agreement. Coinbase Roadmap Addition And Listing
Coinbase added TROLL alongside Centrifuge to its listing roadmap in late September 2025, a step CCN said lifted the price about 25% in 24 hours, with trading reported as going live on 25 September 2025. The context was a deep retracement: from roughly $0.27 in August the token had fallen to about $0.10 by 21 September before the roadmap news.
