Hot Tub Cleaning
Checklist And Schedule.
The routine that keeps a tub clean, in the order to do it.
A hot tub stays clean on a rhythm: test and balance the water two to three times a week, shock after heavy use, rinse the filter every month, wipe the shell and cover regularly, and drain and refill about every three months. Skipping the test is the usual failure. Everything else follows from the water chemistry being right.
Every Week
- Test sanitizer, pH and alkalinity two to three times a week and correct them.
- Skim the surface and check the cover for debris.
- Shock the water after heavy use or a busy weekend.
Every Month
- Rinse the filter cartridge with a hose, working between the pleats.
- Wipe the waterline and the shell with a spa safe cleaner.
- Test calcium hardness and total dissolved solids if you have a meter.
- Clean the cover top and underside, and condition vinyl.
Every Three Months
- Soak the filters in a filter cleaner and replace them if worn.
- Flush the lines, drain, wash the shell and refill.
- Check the cover seal, the lifter and the skirt panels.
- Reset the water chemistry from zero and write down the readings.
The Order For Chemistry
Correct alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitizer. Alkalinity moves pH, and pH changes how the sanitizer behaves, so out of order you chase your own adjustments. Our water chemistry guide has the ranges.
When You Would Rather Not
A test and balance is $45 and a full clean out is $200 with a written report. Plans from $279 a month do the weekly routine for you. See hot tub cleaning.
