JPMorgan Says Buy Take-Two Before GTA 6: The Investor Read

JPMorgan assumed Take-Two at Overweight with a $310 target and added it to its Analyst Focus List, calling fiscal 2027 guidance conservative into the GTA 6 launch. Here is the math.
Card reading JPMorgan Says Buy Take-Two At $310. JPMorgan assumed Take-Two at Overweight with a $310 target and added it.

JPMorgan assumed coverage of Take-Two Interactive at Overweight on August 11, 2026, with a $310 price target, and added it to the firm’s Analyst Focus List as a growth idea. The argument is narrow and specific: management’s fiscal 2027 guidance is conservative heading into the Grand Theft Auto VI marketing ramp, which leaves room for upside to bookings and earnings in fiscal 2027 and 2028.

Summary

  • JPMorgan: Overweight, $310 target, Analyst Focus List. That is roughly 43% above the recent $216 share price.
  • Street consensus across 29 analysts sits at Strong Buy with an average target near $287.
  • GTA 6 ships November 19, 2026 at $80 standard and $99.99 for the Ultimate edition. That is 77 days from publication.
  • Take-Two guides fiscal 2027 net bookings to $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, roughly 20% growth at the midpoint, with operating cash flow above $1 billion.
  • The company is currently unprofitable on a trailing basis, with net income of negative $320 million, so this is a forward earnings story, not a value story.
  • Two things break the trade: another delay, or demand that was pulled forward into pre-orders rather than added.

What JPMorgan Actually Said

On August 11, 2026, JPMorgan assumed coverage of Take-Two Interactive at Overweight with a $310 price target and put the name on its Analyst Focus List as a growth idea.

The thesis is one sentence long: fiscal 2027 guidance is conservative into the Grand Theft Auto VI marketing ramp, and that leaves upside across bookings and earnings estimates in fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028.

Notice what that is not. It is not a call on whether GTA 6 will be a great game. Nobody on a sell side desk is underwriting review scores. It is a call on the gap between what management has told the market to expect and what the analyst believes will actually happen. That gap is the entire trade.

Management guided fiscal 2027 net bookings to $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, about 20% growth at the midpoint. If JPMorgan is right that the number is deliberately low, the stock reprices on the beat, not on the launch.

The Setup: One Game, 77 Days Out

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026. Standard edition is $80. The Ultimate edition is $99.99, and early reporting suggests buyers are gravitating toward the premium tier, which matters more to the model than unit count alone.

Getting here was not smooth. The game was originally targeted for 2025, moved to May 26, 2026, then moved again on November 6, 2025 to November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s statement on the second delay was direct: the extra months would allow the studio to finish the game with the level of polish players expect.

Two delays is context, not a pattern, but it is the single reason a $310 target is available at $216 instead of $280. The market is charging a discount for execution risk on a date that has already moved twice.

The other live variable is spoilers. Leaked footage circulated in late August 2026 and the stock fell 6.22% to $220.75 on August 31. Rockstar acknowledged it publicly, saying this was obviously not how the game was intended to be seen after all this time. Demand did not visibly break, but it is a reminder that this name trades on sentiment between now and launch, and sentiment has a low bar for getting hit.

The Business Underneath The Game

The mistake retail investors make here is treating Take-Two as a GTA lottery ticket. It is a portfolio with one enormous asset attached.

Grand Theft Auto+3%GTA V passed 230M lifetime units
Zynga mobile-7%Toon Blast +8%, Words with Friends +8%, Top Eleven +15%

Read the 84% figure twice. Recurrent consumer spending, meaning in game purchases, subscriptions and virtual currency, is 84% of net bookings. Take-Two is not primarily a company that sells games. It is a company that sells ongoing access to worlds it already shipped, and NBA 2K plus GTA Online carry that.

That changes the shape of the GTA 6 thesis entirely. Unit sales at $80 are a one time event. What actually resets earnings is whether GTA Online rebuilds on the new title and whether the subscription attach rate holds. GTA V is still selling 13 years after release and has crossed 230 million lifetime units. That is the asset being replaced.

The weak spot is mobile. Zynga declined 7% in the quarter. Individual titles grew, but the segment shrank. If GTA 6 lands and mobile keeps eroding, the consolidated growth rate disappoints even on a successful launch. That is the risk almost nobody models.

The trailing price to earnings ratio is not applicable because the company is losing money on a GAAP basis. Every valuation in this name is a forward valuation, which means every valuation in this name is a forecast wearing a multiple. Anyone who tells you Take-Two is cheap is telling you what they assume, not what they measured. That distinction is the one I keep coming back to in Read The Cap, Not The Headline.

What The Rest Of The Street Is Modeling

JPMorgan is the highest published target of the three major calls, but the direction is consistent.

Morgan Stanley added a useful piece of base rate data: publisher stocks have historically outperformed in the run up to highly anticipated launches, averaging roughly 18% appreciation in the final six months. We are inside that window now. That is a statistical tendency, not a guarantee, and it cuts both ways because it implies part of the move has already happened.

Piper Sandler’s point about distribution is the most underrated input in the whole thesis. GTA 5 launched in 2013, before creator led streaming became the dominant discovery channel. GTA 6 launches into an ecosystem where a single creator can put a game in front of tens of millions of people in one session. Take-Two also ran extended footage through a Netflix debut on August 27, 2026, with a YouTube release six hours later. The marketing surface for this launch is structurally larger than anything the franchise has had before.

The Two Ways This Breaks

1. Another Delay

The date has already moved twice. A third slip past November 19 would push the revenue into fiscal 2028, blow up the $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion bookings guide, and reset the multiple hard. Rockstar has held the line publicly and Take-Two reiterated the date at its most recent earnings call, so this is a tail risk, not a base case. But it is the tail risk that actually costs money, and it is why the stock trades at $216 against a $287 consensus instead of at $287.

2. Demand That Was Pulled Forward, Not Added

This is the more likely failure mode, and the most honest person in the room about it is the CEO. Strauss Zelnick described pre-order demand as unprecedented and astonishing, then immediately added the caveat that matters: the company has not sold a single unit yet, and demand could be pulled forward.

Translate that. Enormous pre-orders may represent the same buyers who would have purchased in month three, simply arriving in week one. Launch quarter looks spectacular, the following two quarters look flat, and a stock priced on a growth reset gets repriced on a growth pause. This is the standard pattern in blockbuster software launches and it is exactly what the recurrent spending line is supposed to smooth out. Whether it does is the fiscal 2028 question.

Three Scenarios Through Fiscal 2028

What follows is an illustrative framework, not a forecast, and not investment advice. I am not a financial advisor. The purpose is to show which variable does the work.

Take-Two has roughly 187 million shares outstanding and trades near $216 on a forward multiple of about 26x. So the market is already paying for a large earnings recovery. Two inputs decide the outcome: where fiscal 2028 earnings land after a full year of GTA 6, and what multiple a post launch Take-Two earns.

What has to happenDelay, or launch demand was pulled forward, or mobile erosion offsets the winGuidance met or modestly beaten, GTA Online rebuilds, mobile stabilizesGuidance beaten materially, recurrent spending resets to a new floor, Ultimate edition mix holds

The base case lands near $286, which is almost exactly the 29 analyst consensus of roughly $287. JPMorgan’s $310 sits between base and bull, which is a reasonable place for a conviction call to sit. It is not a heroic number.

Look at the multiple row again. The spread between 24x and 28x is only four turns, far narrower than the spread in a name like Apple, because Take-Two’s rerating comes from the earnings line, not the sentiment line. In this stock the earnings forecast is doing almost all the work, which means the analysis that matters is unit economics and attach rates, not narrative. A watchlist entry with a target price attached is not a position, and it is not a plan. More on that in Watching A Table Is Not A Strategy.

What Investors Get Wrong About Launch Trades

Mistake 1: Buying The Game Instead Of The Business

GTA 6 unit sales are a one time cash event. The repeatable business is 84% recurrent consumer spending across NBA 2K, GTA Online and mobile. If you cannot articulate what happens to that 84% in fiscal 2028, you are not investing in Take-Two, you are betting on a release date.

Mistake 2: Treating Pre-Orders As Demand

Pre-orders measure intensity of anticipation, not total addressable purchases. The CEO said as much. Records get set, headlines get written, and the number tells you almost nothing about the size of the full year cohort.

Mistake 3: Ignoring That The Stock Is Already Up Into It

Publisher stocks average roughly 18% appreciation in the six months before a major launch. That is the base rate, and we are inside the window. Some of the good news is priced. The asymmetry is worse today than it was in May.

Mistake 4: Confusing An Analyst Focus List With A Guarantee

An Analyst Focus List entry means a firm is putting institutional weight behind an idea. It is a signal about conviction, not about outcome. JPMorgan’s own thesis is explicitly about guidance being conservative, which is a judgment call about management behaviour, and management behaviour changes.

The same discipline applies to the other large cap event trade running right now, covered in Apple’s New CEO John Ternus: The Investor Read On What Happens Next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is JPMorgan’s price target on Take-Two?

$310, with an Overweight rating assumed on August 11, 2026, and the stock added to the firm’s Analyst Focus List as a growth idea. Against a recent share price near $216, that implies roughly 43% upside.

When does GTA 6 come out?

November 19, 2026, at $80 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate edition. The game was originally targeted for 2025, moved to May 26, 2026, then moved again to November 19, 2026 in an announcement on November 6, 2025.

Is Take-Two profitable?

Not on a trailing basis. Trailing twelve month revenue is about $6.69 billion, up 15.3%, against net income of negative $320.4 million and trailing earnings per share of negative $1.73. The forward price to earnings ratio near 26x reflects expected earnings after GTA 6, not current results.

What is Take-Two’s guidance for fiscal 2027?

Net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, roughly 20% growth at the midpoint, with operating cash flow above $1 billion and an expected net cash position by fiscal year end. Fiscal Q1 2027 net bookings came in at $1.39 billion, above the guided range.

What is the biggest risk to Take-Two stock?

Two, ranked. First, another delay past November 19, which would push revenue into fiscal 2028 and break current guidance. Second, and more likely, demand pulled forward into the launch quarter rather than added, which produces a spectacular quarter followed by a flat one. Mobile erosion at Zynga, down 7% in the most recent quarter, is the quiet third risk.

The Bottom Line

JPMorgan is not betting on a video game. It is betting that management set a low bar on purpose and will clear it, and that the market has not fully adjusted for a company where 84% of bookings already recur.

That is a reasonable bet with a specific, datable failure point. Either the game ships on November 19 and the fiscal Q3 print beats, or it does not. There is no ambiguity and no slow reveal. Very few equity theses resolve this cleanly, and that clarity is worth something on its own.

The part I would size carefully is the second failure mode. A record launch quarter followed by two soft ones is not a disaster for the business, but it is a disaster for a multiple built on a growth reset. The number that answers it is not units sold in November. It is recurrent consumer spending in the quarter after.

Watch three things: whether November 19 holds, the Ultimate edition mix in the launch quarter, and recurrent spending in fiscal Q4 2027. Everything before that is marketing.
