In my family tree there is a man named John Rae Hamilton. A Hamilton, carrying the explorer’s name, placed there deliberately, generations back, the way you’d set a compass bearing for someone who hasn’t been born yet.
Before trusts, before holding companies, before estate lawyers, families had one piece of inheritance technology that cost nothing and lasted forever: the name. You gave a child a name and you gave him an assignment. Every time it was spoken, the assignment was repeated. A name heard ten thousand times across a childhood is the most consistent instruction a person will ever receive.
The Hamiltons of Scotland understood compression. The clan motto is a single word: Through. Not around. Not eventually. Through. Centuries of family doctrine reduced to one syllable you could hand a five-year-old. Most companies can’t get their values under five hundred words. The Hamiltons did it in seven letters.
The line runs Rae to Hamilton to Wise. Sit with that last one. Wise is not a neutral surname. It’s an instruction wearing a passport. Some families inherit land. Mine inherited an adjective with a standard attached to it, and I named my companies after it, because the assignment was already written.
This is why naming deserves more weight than anyone gives it. What you call a thing is the first order you issue it. Name a company after a compromise and it will compromise. Name a project something forgettable and watch everyone forget it. The label isn’t decoration on the thing. The label is the earliest and most repeated version of the thing.
So name deliberately: children, companies, even the files on your desktop. Somewhere generations ahead of you, someone will carry what you chose, the way John Rae Hamilton carried a bearing set by people he never met.
A name is the shortest will you’ll ever write. Make it say something.
