Before John Rae was the man who found the Northwest Passage’s last link, he was a member of the Lodge of Stromness in Orkney. That detail gets left out of the explorer stories. It shouldn’t be.
Freemasonry, whatever else you think of it, is a technology for transmitting knowledge across generations. Initiation. Degrees. Symbols that compress a lifetime of instruction into an object you can hold in your mind. The rough ashlar and the perfect ashlar say in two stones what most self-help books can’t say in three hundred pages: you are the material, and the work is on yourself.
For a man about to spend decades at the edge of the map, the lodge offered something else: a network that traveled. A Mason could walk into a lodge on another continent and be recognized. In a world where a letter home took a year, that kind of portable brotherhood was infrastructure. Trust, pre-installed.
Notice what actually survives. The men of the Lodge of Stromness are gone. The lodge remains. Institutions that outlast their members all share the same skeleton: rituals that repeat, standards that don’t bend, symbols that carry meaning without needing an explainer, and obligations that bind after the handshake ends.
That skeleton is buildable. Your SOPs are rituals. Your levels of mastery are degrees. Your brand is a symbol: compressed meaning, recognized on sight. Your standards are the obligation. A company with those four things is a lodge. A company without them is a group of people who happen to share a payroll.
The Craft runs its degrees toward thirty-three. The number matters less than the idea under it: mastery is staged, earned in order, and never finished. Rae carried that into the Arctic. The line that carried his name eventually carried it here.
Build something a stranger could be initiated into a century from now. That’s the whole test.
