One Point Per Dollar,
And Nothing To Pay.

A no fee Membership Rewards card that earns a flat one point per dollar, carries purchase and warranty cover and no travel insurance at all, and whose interest rate American Express does not publish. I carry this card. Every figure here is off American Express Canada, read 6 September 2026.

American ExpressAmex GreenAmerican Express Green Card

What The Card Is

Read off American Express Canada on 6 September 2026, in their words before mine.

It Is A Flat Rate Card, Deliberately

Amex states “1 point for every $1 in eligible purchases charged to your Card”. There are no bonus categories and no accelerators. Every other Amex card in Canada beats it on earn. That is not the point of it.

The Points Are Real Membership Rewards

Amex states 1,000 points equals a $10 statement credit, the same rate the Gold and the Platinum redeem at, and the same programme. A no fee card that pools into the same balance is the whole reason this card exists.

The Insurance Is Two Coverages And No More

Amex Canada’s own certificate for this card carries Buyer’s Assurance, extending the manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year to $10,000 per item and $25,000 per policy year, and Purchase Protection, $1,000 per occurrence for 90 days. There is no travel medical, no trip cancellation, no rental car cover. Those are absent from the certificate, not merely unconfirmed.

Supplementary Cards Are Free

Amex states “No annual fee for supplementary cards”, up to nine, with supplementary cardmembers at least 13 years old. On a card that already costs nothing, that makes it the cheapest way to put a Membership Rewards earning card in a second pair of hands.

The Arithmetic On A Free Card

There is no fee, so the only question is what the point is worth.

One Point Is One Cent

At Amex’s own 1,000 points equals $10 rate, this card returns one percent as a statement credit. That is the floor. Transfers and travel bookings can be worth more, and this page does not assert a number it cannot read off Amex.

A No Fee Cash Back Card Beats It On Rate

Two percent in a chosen category on a free cash back card is double this card’s floor. On raw return, the Green loses. What it has instead is the currency, which cash back does not have.

The Welcome Offer Is The Best Year It Will Have

10,000 points on $1,000 of net purchases in three months is ten percent back on that first thousand, on top of the base earn. Every year after that it is a one percent card.

Its Real Job Is Keeping The Balance Alive

Membership Rewards points sit with the account, not the card. A free card that keeps a Membership Rewards account open costs nothing to hold, and that is a different argument from what it earns.

The Case Against Carrying It

Same standard as every other page here.

One Percent Is Beaten By Free Cards

A no fee cash back card in Canada will pay two percent in a chosen category. If the Membership Rewards currency means nothing to you, this card has no argument.

There Is No Travel Insurance At All

Not reduced cover, none. Amex Canada’s certificate for this card carries purchase and warranty protection only. Anyone treating an Amex in the wallet as travel cover is wrong about this one.

American Express Does Not Publish Its Interest Rate

No purchase rate and no funds advance rate appear on any public Amex Canada page for this card, and the cardmember agreement defers both to the per account information box. See below.

Amex Acceptance Still Applies

A free card that is not accepted earns nothing. Acceptance is the same objection here as on every other Amex card on this site.

How It Sits In A Stack

Not advice. How this card reads next to the others published here.

It Is The Cheapest Door Into The Currency

The Platinum is $799 and the Gold is $250. This is $0 and pays into the same Membership Rewards balance at the same $10 per thousand floor. For anyone deciding whether the currency is worth anything to them, this is where to find out.

It Is Not The Card You Spend On

One point per dollar is the base rate of the whole Amex lineup. Every dollar that could have gone on a two percent cash back card or a five point Cobalt category and went here instead cost you the difference.

It Is In My Wallet

One of the nine on the stack page. It earns the least of any of them, and it is also the only one that costs nothing to keep, which is why it is still there.

What Could Not Be Confirmed

In circulation, and not on the issuer page. Printed rather than dropped.

The Interest Rate

No purchase rate and no funds advance rate for this card appear on any public American Express Canada page. The Green Card cardmember agreement states only that “The fees and commissions that apply to your account are set out in the information box and disclosure statement”, and the product page serves a consent gate rather than content. The figures around 20.99 and 21.99 percent in wide circulation could not be confirmed on 6 September 2026.

The Foreign Transaction Fee

Amex Canada’s public exchange rate page refers you to your cardmember agreement, and the Green Card agreement refers in turn to “a single conversion commission as specified in the information box”, without a percentage. The 2.5 percent in wide circulation could not be confirmed.

The Annual Fee As A Figure

Amex states the fee in words, “with no annual fee”, and files the card under its no annual fee credit cards index. It never prints “$0” as a figure on any page read. Published here as no annual fee, which is what Amex actually says.

Whether The Legacy American Express Card Is Still Open

A separate charge card, the American Express Card, still has a current cardmember agreement dated September 2026 in Amex Canada’s legal index, but appears on no acquisition page. Whether it is open to new applicants could not be confirmed. It is a different product from the Green Card on this page.

All figures read off American Express Canada’s own pages and linked PDFs for the American Express Green Card on 6 September 2026: no annual fee, stated in words on the card benefits page and by its listing under Amex Canada’s no annual fee credit cards index, no annual fee for supplementary cards with a maximum of nine and supplementary cardmembers at least 13 years old, an earn rate of one point for every $1 in eligible purchases with no bonus categories and no stated cap, a redemption rate of 1,000 points for a $10 statement credit, a welcome offer of 10,000 Membership Rewards points requiring at least $1,000 in net purchases in the first three months and available only to new Green Card or Choice Card cardmembers with current and former holders of either excluded, Buyer’s Assurance under policy PSI018966745 extending the original manufacturer’s warranty by a period equal to its duration up to one additional year at $10,000 per insured item and $25,000 per cardmember per policy year, Purchase Protection under policy PSI018516570 covering theft or direct physical damage at $1,000 per cardmember per occurrence for ninety days after purchase, an absence of any travel medical, trip cancellation, trip interruption or rental car coverage in the card’s certificate of insurance and summary booklet both effective 1 July 2025, an interest grace period on purchases of 21 days from the statement closing date, one to one point transfers to select frequent flyer programmes, and classification as a credit card under the lending cardmember agreement rather than a charge card. The interest rate, the foreign transaction fee and the annual fee as a numeric figure could not be confirmed on American Express Canada and are published above as unconfirmed. No figure on this page comes from a comparison site. Cody Wise holds this card.

Common Questions

No. American Express Canada lists it under no annual fee credit cards and states there is no annual fee for supplementary cards either, up to a maximum of nine. Read off Amex Canada on 6 September 2026.

One Membership Rewards point per dollar on eligible purchases. There are no bonus categories and no stated cap. Amex publishes a redemption rate of 1,000 points for a $10 statement credit.

10,000 Membership Rewards points, for new Green Card or Choice Card cardmembers, after at least $1,000 in net purchases posted in the first three months. Current and former holders of either card are not eligible.

No. American Express Canada’s certificate of insurance for this card carries Buyer’s Assurance and Purchase Protection only. There is no travel medical, trip cancellation, trip interruption or rental car coverage on it.

American Express Canada does not publish one. The cardmember agreement defers the purchase and funds advance rates to the information box on your own account. No rate is printed on this page because none could be read off the issuer.

A Rate Is Not A Return
Until You Spend There.

Every accelerated rate in Canada is a rate on one category. The only question that matters is whether that category is where your money actually goes.

Not financial advice.
