Yoast SEO Setup: The Plugin Does Not Do The SEO

The green light is not a ranking. It is a plugin agreeing with itself.

Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin that manages titles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps and schema output. It handles the technical plumbing so search engines and AI answer engines can read a site correctly. It does not create rankings, and mistaking its traffic lights for a ranking signal is the most common error people make with it.

Yoast makes a site legible. Legibility is a prerequisite, not an achievement.

It is on every WordPress site I run, configured the same way every time, and I ignore roughly half of what it tells me.

What does Yoast SEO actually do?

Four jobs that genuinely matter. It sets the title and meta description a search engine displays. It manages canonical URLs so duplicate versions of a page do not compete. It generates and maintains an XML sitemap. It outputs structured data describing what the page is.

That last one has quietly become the most valuable. Answer engines lean on structured data to work out what a page contains and whether it answers a question. Schema was a nice to have when Google was the only consumer. It is not any more.

Why the traffic lights mislead people

The readability and keyword scores are heuristics written into a plugin. They do not have access to your competitors, your backlink profile, your search intent match, or anything else that determines whether a page ranks. They count things.

Writing to satisfy them produces a recognisable kind of bad page: the keyword wedged in awkwardly four times, the subheading that exists only to contain it, sentences chopped short to please a readability metric. Every one of those changes makes the page worse for a human, and humans are the ranking signal that actually compounds.

Use the green light as a checklist that you remembered to fill in the fields. Ignore it as a quality judgement.

Optimising for the scoring tool instead of the reader is how a site fills up with pages nobody finishes.

The fields that actually matter

On every post I set five things, and the discipline is that they are deliberately different from each other rather than the same sentence repeated.

The H1 carries the full title including the part that sounds like a person wrote it. The slug carries the search term only, three to five words, stopwords dropped, never the clever half. The SEO title is the search term plus the brand, kept under sixty characters so it survives truncation. The focus keyword is the phrase exactly as a human would type it. The meta description leads with the specific claim rather than the topic, and it never contains a call to action.

The page keeps the voice. The search result gets the tight version. Both jobs get done because they are not fighting over the same field.

One keyword, one post

The failure I see most often on established sites is self inflicted. Two or three posts all targeting the same phrase, splitting their own authority, none of them ranking.

Before assigning a focus keyword, check what is already in use across the library. If two posts are genuinely close, split them deliberately on intent rather than letting them collide: one takes the why, one takes the how. That is a five minute check that prevents a problem which takes months to notice and a rewrite to fix.

Yoast will happily let you assign the same keyword to twenty posts. It is a plumbing tool, not an editor.

What breaks?

Auto generated meta descriptions. If the field is left empty, something gets generated, and it is usually the first sentence of the page truncated mid clause. Every page that matters gets a written one.

Sitemaps full of pages that should not be indexed. Tag archives with one post in them, attachment pages, thin category pages. Every one of those is a page the crawler spends budget on and a candidate for a thin content judgement. Prune them.

And schema conflicts. If a theme, a plugin and Yoast all output structured data for the same page, they can contradict each other. One source of truth per page type, verified in a testing tool rather than assumed.

Technical SEO is not what makes a page good. It is what stops a good page from being invisible.

Common questions

What does Yoast SEO actually do?

It manages the technical layer: search engine titles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps and structured data output. It makes a site legible to search engines and answer engines. It does not create rankings by itself.

Does a green light in Yoast mean the page will rank?

No. The scores are heuristics calculated inside the plugin with no knowledge of your competitors, backlinks or search intent match. Treat green as confirmation you filled in the fields, not as a quality verdict.

Is Yoast SEO worth paying for?

The free version covers titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps and schema, which is the part that matters most. The paid tier mainly adds internal linking suggestions and redirect management, useful on large sites and unnecessary on small ones.

Should two posts have the same focus keyword?

No. Two pages targeting one phrase split their own authority and often neither ranks. If the topics are close, separate them by intent so one answers the why and the other the how.

Does Yoast slow down a website?

Its front end footprint is small and it is rarely the cause of a slow site. Page speed problems on WordPress usually come from themes, page builders, image weight and stacked plugins rather than from an SEO plugin.
