Twenty One Million,
And Nobody Watching.
The bull case for Zcash as the people who hold it actually make it, a shielded pool that is now a quarter of the supply, and the case against at the same weight, including the bug.
Zcash has the same 21 million coin cap as Bitcoin and adds zero knowledge proofs, so a transaction can settle without publishing who sent what to whom. Its shielded pool held 4,361,120 ZEC on 10 August 2026, about 25.85% of supply and 2.22 billion dollars. The last halving was November 2024 and the next is estimated for November 2028.

The Bull Case, As Bulls Make It
Five arguments, stated at their strongest. This is the case the people who hold it make, not a forecast from this site.
The Bitcoin Cap With A Property Bitcoin Does Not Have
Twenty one million coins, a halving every 1,680,000 blocks, the same fixed terminal supply. On top of that, a shielded transaction settles without publishing the sender, the receiver or the amount. The bull argument is that scarcity and privacy are the two properties cash actually had, and that only one chain of this size ships both.
The Shielded Pool Is Being Used, Not Just Offered
Optional privacy usually goes unused. Zcash’s shielded pool held 4,361,120 ZEC on 10 August 2026, about 25.85% of the entire supply and roughly 2.22 billion dollars, having crossed a billion around 9 August. A quarter of the money moving to the private side is adoption, not a feature flag.
The Issuance Schedule Is Mechanical
The block subsidy fell from 3.125 to 1.5625 ZEC on 23 November 2024 at block 2,726,400, and falls to 0.78125 at block 4,406,400, estimated November 2028. No committee sets it and no vote is required for it to happen.
It Fixed A Critical Bug In Days, In Public
A soundness flaw in the Orchard action circuit was found on 29 May 2026 by Taylor Hornby, an independent researcher auditing for Shielded Labs. Zebra 4.5.3 shipped an emergency soft fork disabling Orchard actions, Zebra 5.0.0 hard forked to a corrected circuit, and most nodes had synchronised by 3 June. The turnstile mechanism meant total supply could not be inflated even in the worst case.
Ironwood Rebuilt The Pool Rather Than Patching It
The Ironwood upgrade activated on 28 July 2026 at block 3,428,143, closed the original Orchard pool holding roughly 3.66 million ZEC, and opened a new pool built on a corrected zero knowledge circuit. Migrating 1.7 billion dollars of shielded value rather than living with a suspect circuit is the conservative choice, and the pool has grown since.
The Case Against, At The Same Weight
The other half. If you skip it you are reading an advertisement.
The Bug Was In The Part That Matters
An under constrained element in the Orchard action circuit could have allowed double spending inside the shielded pool. Zero knowledge cryptography is exactly the code where a flaw is hardest to see and where failure is silent. It was found by an auditor, not by the network noticing.
The Market Repriced It A Third In A Day
ZEC fell approximately 30% to 37% in a single day on the disclosure. Whatever the technical severity, the market treats a circuit soundness issue as an existential category of risk, and that will be true of the next one too.
Three Quarters Of The Supply Is Transparent
25.85% shielded means 74.15% of ZEC sits in the open, used exactly like a coin with no privacy at all. The privacy argument describes a minority of the actual usage.
The Halving Schedule Is Currently On The Ballot
A coinholder vote running from 25 August to 14 September 2026 would replace the periodic halvings with a gradual issuance curve. The supply cap stays, but the claim that nobody can change the schedule stops being true the moment a vote can.
The All Time High Still Belongs To 2016
$818.05 against $3,191.93 set on 28 October 2016. Ten years, several upgrades, and the high water mark is still the first month of trading.
What I Take From It
Not advice. How the argument reads to someone who builds businesses rather than trades tokens.
The Shielded Pool Is The Only Metric That Matters
Not price, not the halving. If the share of supply sitting behind a proof keeps climbing, the thesis is working. If it stalls at a quarter, Zcash is a transparent coin with an expensive optional feature.
How A Team Handles Its Worst Week Is Real Information
Disclosure, emergency soft fork, hard fork, most nodes synced inside a week, then a full pool migration two months later. I judge software teams on the incident rather than the roadmap, and this one behaved well.
A Vote On Issuance Weakens The Best Line
The strongest argument for Zcash is that it has Bitcoin’s supply rules. Holding a live vote on the issuance curve is a reasonable thing to do and it makes that argument weaker, not stronger. Both can be true at once.

Same shape, same rule: the bull case and the case against, at the same weight, with every figure sourced and dated.
Common Questions
That it has the same 21 million supply cap and halving structure as Bitcoin while adding zero knowledge proofs that let a transaction settle without publishing sender, receiver or amount, that its shielded pool reached 4,361,120 ZEC on 10 August 2026, about 25.85% of supply and roughly 2.22 billion dollars, and that the project handled a critical circuit bug in 2026 with an emergency fork and then rebuilt the pool rather than patching it.
Block 4,406,400, estimated November 2028, when the block subsidy falls from 1.5625 to 0.78125 ZEC. The last halving was 23 November 2024 at block 2,726,400, which cut the subsidy from 3.125 to 1.5625. The post Blossom halving interval is 1,680,000 blocks, roughly four years.
A soundness vulnerability in the Orchard action circuit disclosed on 29 May 2026, found by independent researcher Taylor Hornby during an audit for Shielded Labs. An under constrained element could have permitted double spending inside the shielded pool, though the network’s turnstile mechanism meant total ZEC supply could not be inflated. No exploit was confirmed. Zebra 4.5.3 disabled Orchard actions as an emergency soft fork and Zebra 5.0.0 hard forked to a corrected circuit, with most nodes synchronised by 3 June 2026.
About 25.85% as at 10 August 2026, or 4,361,120 ZEC worth roughly 2.22 billion dollars. It crossed one billion dollars around 9 August 2026. The remaining roughly 74% sits in transparent addresses.
That the 2026 Orchard bug was a soundness flaw in the zero knowledge circuit itself, the one part of the system where a failure is silent and hardest to audit, that the market repriced ZEC down roughly a third in a day on the disclosure, and that about three quarters of the supply is used transparently, so the privacy argument describes a minority of actual usage.
